International and National Rose Societies Websites

These websites link up to national rose societies which provide information on rose culture and history worldwide.

 

World Federation of Rose Societies -- An association of 36 national rose societies with information and links to rose societies, public rose gardens, and information worldwide.
American Rose Society -- The ARS and the Gardens of the American Rose Center are headquartered in Shreveport, Louisiana. ARS members also receive the monthly magazine American Rose. This site also provides information for locating a rose society in your local area.
Canadian Rose Society -- A great site for those looking for information on hardy roses and how to grow them. This site also provides information for finding local Canadian Rose Societies and public rose gardens across the country.
Royal National Rose Society -- Founded in 1876, this is the world's oldest specialist plant society. The Gardens of the Rose in St. Albans is currently closed for restoration. This site also provides information on other public rose gardens in the UK.
Heritage Roses Group -- The Grandmother of the heritage rose movement founded by Miriam Wilkins in the 1960s.

Heritage Rose Foundation -- Established in 1986, the Heritage Rose Foundation is devoted to the preservation of old roses.

 

 

Rose Gardens Worldwide Websites

The rose gardens listed below are some of the largest and most important collections offering websites. This list will expand with time and we invite suggestions of other public rose gardens for inclusion.

 

World Federation of Rose Societies Rose Locator Database

Fondazione Roseto Botanico "Carla Fineschi" di Cavriglia/Italy -- This private garden in the Tuscan hills houses what is probably the largest collection of roses in private hands.
Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen/Germany -- The garden at Sangerhausen houses one of the world's great rose collections established before the First World War.
San Jose Heritage Rose Garden -- A new garden in San Jose, California, with a large collection of early roses.
The Gardens of Kasteel Hex/Belgium -- A restored castle and gardens in Belgium. Kasteel Hex was built in the 18th century as was originally the home of the Prince-Bishop of Liège.
Mottisfont Abbey Gardens, Hampshire, UK -- This 13th century priory houses the National Collection of old-fashioned roses.

Combined Rose List -- This is the place to order a book containing a list of nearly 15, 000 roses for sale in the US and worldwide annotated by nursery and contact information.

Help Me Find -- This Internet site lists over 26,000 roses and lists where you can order them.

How to Pronounce French Rose Names -- Just what it sounds like, they publish a guide to pronouncing French rose names.

Old Garden Roses and Beyond -- Paul Barden's information site. Barden is a breeder of new 'old-fashioned' roses and photographer.

RogersRoses -- This site is based on Roger Phillips' rose photography. Roger and botanist Martyn Rix were the honorees at the Great Rosarians of the World lecture series in 2004. Roger's excellent photography is supplemented by photos from Bill Grant and many others. An excellent site for researching what a particular rose looks like.

Rosa Gallica -- A French site with excellent information on the history of old roses in France.

Baldo Villegas' Bugs and Roses Home Page -- Sacramento, California, entomologist Baldo Villegas' unique coverage of rose bugs and diseases.

Roses Unlimited, Laurens, SC -- Own-root modern and antique roses. A source for a number of unusual roses from worldwide rose hybridizers.

Ashdown Roses, Campobello, SC -- A source for unusual own-root roses for the south and similar climates. Also a source for Mike Lowe's antique roses.

David Austin Roses, Tyler, TX -- The source for David Austin English Roses worldwide.

Heirloom Roses, St. Paul, OR -- Own-root antique and modern roses.

Hortico, Inc, Waterdown, Ontario, Canada -- A wide selection of modern and antique roses. Will ship to the US in season.

Roses of Yesterday and Today, Watsonville, CA -- Founded by Francis E. Lester in the 1930's and now managed by Pat and Newt Wiley's sons, Andy and Jack & Jack's wife Guinivere. They specialize in old, rare, unusual, and selected modern roses.

Sequoia Nursery, Moore Miniature Roses, Visalia, CA -- Ralph Moore is the founder of the modern miniature rose in the US.

Palatine Roses, A new Canadian source for Kordes and Geschwind roses buded on multiflora understock. Ships to the US.

Pickering Nurseries, Port Hope, Ontario, Canada -- An extensive list of both modern and antique roses. Will ship to the US in season.
